John came back
From fighting In iraq
Never was the same

Sitting in a dark room
Even he couldn't explain
All the things he felt and heard

His exasperated girlfriend would say
You're a grown man
Why don't you just get over it

Like if he was more a man
His PTSD would go away

Sally was a pretty girl
Diagnosed bipolar I
When the darkness hit her
It would hit her hard

Felt like she was trapped
Inside a big glass box
Separating her from the world

Wanting to run
She’d fear she'd never get out
But she could see the happy people
The ones who said they cared

Her best friend Katy
Wanted to go out meeting boys

She’d also ask
Why can't you just get over it
You'll feel better
If you put on makeup and a dress

Bobby was the shyest kid
He'd stammer when the teacher
Tried to make him talk
Rolled her eyes when the other kids would laugh

Years later, he learned
he had an extreme anxiety disorder
Made worse by all those years
Of taunts and torture

They always asked him too
Why didn't he just get over it
I guess they never realized
He always asked himself this very same question

Most of us get up
Hoping to overcome our problems
But when it’s hardwired into your brain
It’s just part of who you are

Everyone has their ups and downs
Everyone needs someone sometime
Just to listen, hear how we feel inside
And make us know we aren’t alone
