lyrics

Wearing nothing but a sweater
On the beach
Desperately wanting, to be famous
And for the world, to know who she was

That she existed, and didn’t
A sad, vulnerable and aging woman
Hiding her pain
Behind lipstick and platinum hair

With a sexy, little girl’s laugh
Mocking the world
While crying out
To be rescued

From herself
She pleads
Just don’t make me into a joke
Sitting alone in an empty house

Perpetual insomniac
The lonely girl
Popping pills, while becoming
The original super-star

Who always felt like a fake
Never able to live up, to the image
The reality, that she had become
To everyone but herself

Prisoner of her own self destruction
Just wanting to disappear
While looking into mirrors
To try and see who she was

Instead of Norma Jean
All the men looking, but never seeing
Her, afraid of the night, of the emptiness
That would never end

Needing to be noticed
While also, needing to be something else
Than she was
Hiding inside herself

Till her melancholy end
With a white piano
That followed her everywhere
Like her childhood

If she was loved or not
Life in general, she said
Was just a series of mismatches
Right down to self and self-image

But she thought her image protected her
From the unbearable truth
Of who she was, always
Overshadowed by the 60 foot Marilyn

And the fairy tales and jealous men
Who would hit her hard
And never turn her into someone else
Other than the blonde she played

The celluloid aphrodisiac
Served up for the masses
While longing to be the artist
Who was given everyone’s respect

Alone in her empty Brentwood mansion
Talking to herself
And taking one too many pills
Sliding into endless darkness

Her desire to die, sprang from inside
A place where she spend her life
While giving everyone that special smile
That could break your heart

With her own heart
Already broke
Torn between men, while being
Perpetually abandoned
